I see it from both ends. I would be very suspicious if I found an email in my mailbox about some forum I'd never heard of from a website and email address I dont know, with a link telling you to 'unsubscribe'. They're usually scams. Heck, I was suspicious when I got an email telling me my server had been suspended because I was sending malicious emails to AOL users
What happened to the boards? Well...apparently phpbb allows members to sign up to get e-mail notifications whenever someone replies to a topic. It got out of hand, and without my knowledge AOL servers were getting over 100 emails a day from my site. Those emails turned into complaints (why someone would request an email and then complain about it is beyond me - I'm guessing it was intentional). AOL sent a notice to my server, who promptly shut it down.
So..I'll be looking for a new server, as my old one is now holding the site for a hefty ransom. I can only hope this wasn't intentional...because while it has cost me nothing but inconvenience, it has cost my server (who was a fantastic company) a great deal of money to deal with the problem they created. This is the reason why hosting websites costs so much. So please grow up and stop making life harder for everyone
That being said, I will have the boards restored soon enough, and subsequently e-mail notifications will be disabled
