First, destroy all the stations in that system. Then go and destroy all the ships you can (make sure you only destroy their ships, for example if you were taking over Earth I wouldn't shoot the Klingons.

Earth keeps spawning more ships out of thin air... Of course. What you have to do is keep watch of the strength of that planet, attack the ships until strength reach 0. it may take a while if the planet is strong.

Is there a non-mlitary method of taking planets owned by other factions (Similiar to the non-military methods of owning independant planets)

Isn't a non-military conquest an oxymoron.

Actually it is possible to take over planets without having to fire a single shot. This is how you do it:
Get your local prestige on the planet you want up to 100% Depending on which empire that planet belongs to, you have to kill all they're enemies. For example if you want to take over the Vulcans, then you have to have taken over the Romulan Empire beforehand. If it's a civilian system you want (like Tepos) then you don't have to kill anyone. Just go back and forth until it says you now have the planet (but you still need 100% local prestige)
It's that easy. Of course, it is easier to take large empires' planets (human, Klingon) by force as they have a lot of enemies.
Hope this has been helpful ;D

so as stupid as this sounds if you visit planets you increase your prestige with them doing that?

To increase your prestige you dan do 2 things
1 - send your away team down to the planet and hoep they do something good. 2 - kill any pirates in that system. you will gain prestige for each one killed. The amount earned depends on the strength of that ship.
